Second photoshoot-front cover

Second set of photographs

Here is my second photoshoot and for this I chose two models as I did not know which one would photograph better so I got two, to later compare and decide. The first two pictures were tester pictures to test the settings and then I went straight in with my first model, she then had a clothe change while I changed models and then they switched and changed clothes again so in the end I had two models each wearing two different sets of clothes. These pictures however had a blue tinge once I had uploaded them so I will do research into how I can prevent that.

First photoshoot-front cover

First set of photographs

In this shoot I was pushed for time and it is reflected in my work, however I experimented with the lighting and positions of the model and I know what to look for. I will retake this photoshoot but with more time so I can try even more things.

Front cover- how much I followed my research
In my research I found that here was not much on the front cover and I think I followed this research and did not put much on the front cover. The main model and focus is the girl in the front cover of that picture and mine was also a girl and she was also the main focus. She wears colourful clothes and her background is colourful and mine ciontrasts this but this is probably because our content was different. My content was art so my front cover needed to be quite serious and relatable to art and the subjects in my magazined and I think i portrayed what I wanted to do.

Content page- how much I followed my research
The content page I researched had a double spread which I did not do, but their first page was just a letter from someone so I did not do that. But on the content page i did follow some of their ideas like the rule of thirds and the three pictures. I followed the pattern where they had the numbers down the left and then the content of that page and then the picture.  The only thing I would say that I added was the word content at the top of the page, I did not put the seasons on it as I would assume the magazine I took my research from covers the whole year hense all the seasons, whereas my magazine would be weekly and only cover the content relevant to that time period.

These are my final front cover and content page. Both are obviously related and focused on schoot. They are both clearly focused on one unit which you could tell fron the words on the the front cover and the content on the content page. The pictures on the content page were all taken on school grounds and of school related subjects; two pictures are students one a year 11 and the other a sixth form student, my other picture is of an art teacher. The main topic I focused on was art but I did not purly focus on art because I wanted some different matters and important things that would be relative to students in that school and would make them interested not only in there own school but in the magazine.

These are the pictures from my content page photoshoot but after I had cut all the pictures that were no good. I took various pictures with different people to add divercity. I used naturalism and melodrama, some very very natural but then some looked false and forced, out of this selection I choose three to go on my content page.

This is my content page drawings. As you can see i tried lot of rough ideas i also drew a grid which the page then had to fit in with as it needs to comply with the rule of thirds. I then chose a design and drew it large but then drew the grid lines on it to make sure it was possible to comply with those rules. I will have the title going across the top third but only taking up up two thirds of this space, I will then have a picture in the last third of the top third. In the third box in both the second and third, third i will have a picture. In the second and first third of the second and third colum I will have the contents of my magazine.
These were my front page drawing ideas. They were rough but it gave me an idea of how i wanted my front page to look. I decided to follow the ont in the drawing that is larger than the rest because I thought it fitted in best with my research. I did not want to over crowd the page with information but i wanted to get some eyecatching subjects on there. The title will be at the top to the left as that is what my research has told me I need to do. In addition to my research I have also added a barcode and put a school crest on their to show it is a resembalance and product of the school, the barcode makes it seem like a realistic magazine.

This is my final front cover. I was very happy with this piece because I think I used and gained a lot of skills including photo shopping. I took the colour from her skin and used this colour for both the middle of my magazine title and the text at the bottom of the page. I made sure I had no widow words as they would be hanging in the air. I also took note to have hanging pictures of sentences that hand on the edge. If I was to do this task again I think I would have changed the colour of the top the model is wearing as it tones in with the white background and some of the words are unclear as they blend into the picture.
This is my final content page. I complied with the rules of third and sectioned my page as you can see everything is vertically in thirds. I am happy with my first attempt at the magazine but if I was to do it again I would set it out much differently but I will take this on board next time.

This page is about my photograph being photoshopped, to do this I used a program called adobe photoshop.

Finally i chose this picture, it shows the model concentrating but is still a beautiful person. From all the rest of the photos this photo particularly stands out because it is well lit with both natural light and artificial light. Although this picture is not that highly focused on the artwork that is the comprimise because the model looks lovely and it is wel lit and positioned, the idea of art is still present though.

This was my final picture that went on my magazine's front cover after it had been photoshopped. I 'stamped' out the creases in the cloth behind the model and I smoothed out any blemishes she had on her skin. Although I was happy with my final decision, as I started to photoshop the top the model was wearing merged with the background so i will put some writing over her breast to iliminate that problem.
Here is my scaled down first set of photographs:
These were the first set of photographs I took although I took some good and dynamic pictures but they were not suitable for the magazine so I decided I would retake them. I experimented with different angles, lighting, shading and the positioning of my model. Taking all of this into account I can take new pictures and take on board all I have learnt from my first set of photos.

Here is my scaled down second set of photographs:

These were my second set of photographs which were much better than the first set. I picked a technique that I likes and tested it out in different ways in order to take the best picture. I did test out some dynamic lighting and shading but it did not look very good for a school magazine but I no for later knowledge how I can create a dynamic and effective picture.

This girl is smiling and has her art work in the picture, the main fous in the picture is the girl. My main focus will now be the girl I am using as a model. She wears colourful clothes but all the contrast in colours makes the page look unorganised. She has art objects around her such as paint, canvas' and a art box. My model will have some sort of art resembalence objects in the picture.
Title ideas

For magazine titles I looked at a thesaurus and searched ‘pop’ and came up with lots of ideas. I wrote up all the ideas and thought about with ones would suit a popular music magazine. I said them over and over to myself and thought about what words could be popular in the world and how much they could catch on.

I narrowed down my list of 13 titles to 6 more focused titles. I contemplated further on each of these 6 titles I also chose a synonym for ‘roar’ and also wrote down ‘raw’ as I liked the word but I wanted to see if it would look better spelt another way.

I made a tally chart and asked 13 people what title they liked the most and it came out that ‘explosion’ was the most popular. I looked at the meanings of the word and it is a very strong word that destroys things so the word leaves mark!

To make the word come across as a positive I need to pick exactly the right font and colouring to not make it a negative magazine title. It needs to be eye catching but at the same time it cant be to agressive.
Font research

Once I had chosen the title I tested out different fonts to see what would look good. I looked at all different fonts and sizing and came up with a final font I will now test it out with lots of different effects and colours to see what looks the best and most eye catching.

In my magazine I am going to take my initial design from the billboard magazine as I like the way it is set out.

In this issue of billboard Taylor Swift is in front of the magazine title, the name and subtitle however are infront of her but are at the bottom of the page so are not obstructing her. The background is a red curtain, again coloured. The outfit she wears is black and her hair it up it has a very minimulistic look. All the words on he page are to her left. The title 'billboard' is at the top of the page but is a couple centermeters down from the top, it goes from one side to the other with no spaces at the edge. The lower case b, o and d are coloured in. The b is coloured red maybe to match the background colour and the o and the d are yellow to maybe contrast ther background, however some of the text on the page is also yello so these colours match. At the top of the magazine is black and the colour of the dress is black so these colours match. The colours of some text is white and the colour of the title is white so again they match.
I do think however there are a lot of negatives in this front cover. Such being that the pose of Taylor Swift looks very forcd and fake, she looks uncomfortable and not very happy, my magazine being a pop magazine I want to make it more cheerful and I want my model to look happy and approachable. With the model being in a short, black, lowcut dress it gives the impression that she is intending on looking sexy and firece with the additions to a red background which simbolises sex. But I think the picture has failed to portray this message as it does not look very professional and asIi said it looks forced  and does not represent the sex symbol it was intended for. To make my own project better I would change the pose and maybe the clothing. I would also change the background because at the moment it is like an old fashioned theatre and does not relate to pop, as pop is more upbeat and  more joyful.

This front cover has the model in the middle of the page with writing either side of her, the title of the magazine is also directly in the middle like everything is central. The name of the artist is bold and almost centeral, it is just below her clevage as to be provocative.
This picture portrays more of the direction that I want to take. The picture itself is bold and the attention is pointed at the 'M' in her hand, almost like a cage but the 'M' and the colour of her hair are very similar so she could be a part of the cage or she could be behind the bars of a cage because she is just a product created by her mangement, a cage is a very strong image and comparason to make. The hands holding the 'M' are wearing some sort of rubber latex which is directly linked to bondage, so she could be portraying again like Taylor Swift intended to do a sex symbol but I believe unlike Taylor, Miley did pull this off.
The picture comes to aproximatley her waist so i will take this into consideration when taking my photographs. The facial expressions are very bold and are quite serious, I am not sure which one would be most appropriate at the time so I will take a variety of pictures including happy, sad and serious facial expressions. The hair is down and is quite dark like her make up.

From my research I have come up with a criteria that I want my photograph and model to look like. My criteria consists of the hair being down, the photograph being to approximatly from her wait and above, the outfit will be black and have some kind of sexy representation. If the models hair is dark she will have dark make up, if the models hair is light she will have very suttle make up.

music magazine research

I am going to research into muic magazines- mainly pop.

In this magazine the picture stands out, all the writing is behind the picture of Justin Bieber himself and the picture is the focus. Bright colours were used for the background and the writing but the clothes in the picture are very basic and plain. The title of the magazine is centered on the page and then the singers name is also in a very large font making it clear what the main subject of that issue is. Most of the content listed is to the left of the page apart from a subject placed in the space above his shoulder. There is only one picture on this page.

This picture contrasts the billboard magazine as it has a plain white background with no colour but the clothes cher lloyd is wearign are very brightly coloured to make her stand out. The text is very bright for the title and the main focus is highlighted in a bubble nearly in the center of the page. In this case the picture of the singer is in the background and the words and other pictures are brought forward. This magazine also has previews all around the page and not just down one side. It has a column across the bottom of things that may stand out to young girls. There arev multiple pictures on this page.
This picture focuses on two people and was relevant to the time as it was a very popular subject. Some text is behind the picture and sopme text is infront of the picture. There are lots of other pictures on this page and it is cramed with previews of whats in this magazine.
This magazine like the first one focuses on the artist herself, but unlike the first one her name is infront of her and the previews of the magazine are spread out around Miley. Like the Justin Bieber billboard issue above she is wearing plain clothes and the background is colourful.

Content page research

This school magazine content page has 3 main topics and you can see that from the pictures as they stand out on the page. They have the page numbers down the left of the page and then the main focus of that page next to it to catch the attention of the audience. I will take on board and use the ideas of pictures to describe the main topic and hopefully attract the attentions of my magazine readers.

Tuesday, 7 October 2014

To catch the eye of my target audience I had to choose a model who I knew would photograph well so I could get a good magazine cover. I also needed to portray my choosen focus subject which was art. I finally chose my final front cover picture after re-taking my pictures and going through a lot of indecisiveness.

Here are some pictures that made it close to the front cover:

I liked this picture because of the shadowing and the stern, strong look but it was not appropriate for the sort of magazine i was doing. This picture is also to dark looking to be for a student.

I nearly chose this picture because it clearly displays art, it is also well illuminated and has some shadowing. However, I did not choose this picture because it was to unfocused on the work she was doing.

The font on this school magazine is clearthis shows me that my font needs to be bold and clear. The title is at the top with the crest, not central but away from the edge. This tells me the titkle does not go directly in the center but to the left a little but not completly on the side.

I tested all different fonts to see which font i took an interest in. I took into consideration the clarity of it and how easy it was to read, and how much it caught your eye. I decided i wanted a basic font but with a twist so it was not boring.

This is my front cover research.

This magazine is obviously focusing on college as the word stands out on the page. The title is at the top of the page and more towards the left which is average in most magazines. the girl in the picture is in focus and everything apart from the girl is blurred. Theres is not a lot on this page. On this page the girl is the main focus and i want my magazine to be the same, I want my main model to be the main focus.
This magazine was made by a student and I particularly liked this front cover. It was a colourful and full of content page. However, it does look a little overcrowded and that there are to any things on this page. There are also to many fonts so I will take this into account and use it in my own work.

This picture is what i took my front cover photo inspiration from. I liked the way the girl is working in the photoshoot and you can clearly see what subject she is doing.
